Sneaker Fan Book SFB - Nike Epic Technology
SFB (SNEAKER FANBOOK), which continues to be close to Japan's unique sneaker culture, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024. In line with this, the opening feature focuses on the evolution of NIKE sole technology, centered on "AIR," which had a major influence on sneaker history. For the fun sneaker snap feature, we once again held photo sessions in Sendai, Nara, and Hiroshima for the first time with the cooperation of the audience. It includes style samples from 14 cities across the country, as well as snaps submitted by readers via email.

When SFB was born in 2014, the sneaker scene was in the midst of the nationwide NIKE AIR HUARACHE boom. Of course, the special feature at the beginning of the book also explains the reprint model and history of HUARACHE. When you purchase SFB2024 on Amazon, you can download a bonus page of "AIR HUARACHE" edited in the same format as the opening feature, but this bonus is the first to focus on "HUARACHE", which is the upper fitting technology, rather than the sole technology. It is a homage to SFB.

However, SFB at that time differed from its current editorial policy that was completely user-oriented, and was structured as an information magazine that borrowed pre-release samples from each brand and photographed them. Although I still feel that there is a certain value in such a magazine-like structure, in the modern form of information distribution where brands themselves utilize SNS and continue to disseminate the latest information in real time, from photography to publication. To be honest, I felt that there was a limit to the freshness of the information in a "paper book," which requires at least half a month to read. There was a growing need to change our editorial policy, as it was difficult to borrow samples of AJ1 reprint models, which are of interest to many readers, and samples of leading sneakers such as the New Balance M1300JP.

Due to this behind-the-scenes story, SFB underwent a major renewal in 2017 to its current format. In "SFB2017 A/W", the first edition after the renewal, the opening feature inherited the structure of an information magazine, but we called on readers who were connected on Instagram and held sneaker snap photo sessions in 12 cities nationwide. This was an unusual attempt for a street magazine whose street snaps were usually associated with the Harajuku area, but the coordination that appealed to sneaker fans outside the Tokyo area also reached a high level, giving a fresh shock to Instagrammers. It must have been.

“SFB2019”, which was released about two years later, has been redesigned to have the same opening feature as the current sneaker encyclopedia. The commemorative first encyclopedia was a special feature on adidas' YEEZY. YEEZY, which was all the rage at the time, ended its brand development due to contract issues with Ye (Kanye West). There are almost no other magazines that feature the YEEZY series, so "SFB2019" may be valuable as a reference to the era when its popularity was at its peak.

Even now in 2024, SFB continues its stance of editing from the same perspective as sneaker fans across the country. Audience members who have back issues of SFB should be able to enjoy the changes in coordination that realistically reflect the times. As a book that condenses the warmth of sneaker culture, I hope that it will be enjoyed by a wide range of generations.
