Tompkins Square Park - Forty Years
For more than four decades, Tompkins Square Park has stood as the heart of New York City’s downtown community. From the squatter movements and riots of the 1980s, to skateboarding’s imprint in the 1990s, to the art & music scenes that continue to gather here today, the park has mirrored the changing face of downtown culture.
This book brings together the work of photographers Clayton Patterson, Alain Levitt, Cheryl Dunn, Adam Zhu, and Nolan Zangas, five distinct eyes spanning generations, to tell the story of a space that is both stage and sanctuary. Their images capture protest, fleeting summers and endless nights that make Tompkins Square Park an archive of New York.
