Object - Yuka Kobayashi

This project are created from the painting archive produced by interdisciplinary visual artist Yuka Kobayashi between 2020 and 2024 to aim to redefine the significance of painting and pursue an objective perspective within the medium of painting.

An integral part of this project includes an attempt to track the situations on the other side depicted through painting. A painting with color information can be seen as a fluid mass of paint captured like an x-ray and the painting is simplified to outlines and textures, drawing attention to its material aspect by removing the color information. How do we feel when we touch its skeleton, which is sometimes reduced to a bare form? Removing the colour information allows us to consider the anonymity and fascination of intention projected onto the canvas through a monochrome mask and to re-evaluate the relationship between colour and the intention behind it in the painting.

Paintings are constructed through multiple languages that interfere with each other as needed, and thoughts and emotions are expressed through human movement, manifesting as colour, density, and texture. This allows paintings to function as a more neutral and reliable record in different way than photography in proving their existence, as they maximise and project thoughts and emotions through body movement.

It aims also to intentionally remove and transcend the significance of the content originally depicted in the painting by digitally extending the skeleton of brush touch texture and this reconstruction seeks a three-dimensional perspective. This project ultimately seeks to expand our understanding of painting, not just as a visual form, but as a medium rich in layered significance and human expression.

Object reflects the idea of capturing paintings as dimensional substances beyond their flat surfaces.
