"In the mid 1980s, the French filmmaker Chris Marker attempted to build a chatbot called Dialector. Anticipating the age of generative Al, the programme was given a typical Markerian twist: in response to your queries, Dialector spat out random images - cats, owls - and text. In an essay evaluating the project for this issue of frieze, Paul Chan writes that Marker's love of the dialogic nature of art and inquiry meant he 'didn't pursue life; he pursued lives. In doing so, he created an 'array of selves' that could serve as a model for the artist-as-community, rather than standalone genius. Today, community has become fashionable gabble in contemporary art. This issue asks how - and where - it is lived. Our columns circle around the built environments that shape us, from new developments in Côte d'Ivoire to the imaginary spaces of Minoru Nomata. In the features section, Rianna Jade Parker explores how a diverse group of artists living and working in early 20th-century Jamaica coalesced into a movement. Meanwhile, Blk Art Group member Marlene Smith speaks to Lubaina Himid about the benefits of more direct collaboration. We also see how four radical galleries have curated generation-crossing programmes in Tokyo and how American publisher Primary Information drives art discourse today through reprints of radical magazines and documents - a reminder, like Marker's project, that community can be formed across time as much as in it."

Frieze magazine was set up in the early nineties. It is one of the best UK based magazines devoted to bringing the reader up to date with the latest art and culture. Frieze is published eight times a year and will contain honest reviews and articles by today’s radical writers, curators and artists. Frieze contains features on all the arts from visual to music.
