We should be celebrating – it’s a World Cup year, the biggest tournament in the biggest sport is back. But this one feels somehow even grimmer than the last. And why would OOF look on the bright side when there’s a big abyss to stare into? In issue seventeen we’ve got Spanish duo Democracia trying to to emancipate fans by bringing Marxist theory into the stands, we’ve got a bloke called Wankers of the World calling out sportswashing, and we’ve got Neville Gabie’s epic project looking at the often political symbolism of goalposts around the world. Fun! Elsewhere, we look at how painter Hurvin Anderson has continually repainted the same scene of mates trying to get their ball back, and we explore Gerry Cranham’s stunning photo of a leaping goalkeeper. Don’t worry, there’s also a bit of World Cup joy in the shape of Stéphane Meunier’s amazingly intimate behind-the-scenes photos of Zizou et al on the journey to winning the damn thing in 1998.
