Great Barrier Reef Notebook
Published in 1893 by William Saville-Kent (1845-1908), 'The Great Barrier Reef of Australia' describes the corals, polyps, and other creatures living in the coral reef off the coast of Queensland. Illustrated with some fifty meticulously captioned photographs, the book takes on a particularly aesthetic dimension in its final pages, which offer sixteen colour lithographs made from Saville-Kent's original watercolours. Scientific accuracy is somewhat sacrificed, but the spectacular brilliance of the colours does justice to the infinite nuances of life then proliferating in the Great Barrier Reef, now threatened by global warming.
