The Sea - Studies of Waves Notebook
In 1890, Henri Rivière went to Saint-Briac and painted watercolours that would give rise to seven plates grouped under the title "The Sea: Wave Studies." They were woodcut and in colour at the same time as the fifty or so "Breton Landscapes" by the painter, who was also an engraver. Through the choice of framing, the accuracy of the observation, the softness of the colours, the effective simplicity of the drawing, and the presence of cartouches, he pays a clear homage to the traditional Japanese art of ukiyo-e ("images of the floating world").
