Scenery #2

Editor's letter:

I HAD MY time in New York about 13 years ago. I was an intern, working for an art photographer in a studio on Canal Street in Chinatown. My job was primarily to scan negatives for book projects and archiving. Not the most exciting job description, but I liked it, as I got to see the full sequence of every picture on each roll of film.

Not far from that studio is Peter Schlesinger's studio and home. Peter stopped photographing years ago, but his photo albums remain, and remind me of the sequence on a roll of film- a life's story in pictures.

For this issue of Scenery, we look inside Schlesinger's photo albums, dating back to the late 'os when he picked up his first cam-era. Decades of moments that take us all around the world and end in New York in the early 'gos.
We also travelled to South Africa, Water Island, Italy (of course, it's summer), and Baalbek in Lebanon, where we photographed the Palmyra hotel for a travelogue about a beautiful corner of the world.
Despite currently lying empty, you feel the presence of all the people who have been there and left their mark on the hotel.
The Polaroid on the opposite page was taken on this very trip, and captures the Temple of Bacchus - still standing, almost 2,000 years after it was built.

About Scenery:

Scenery is an interiors magazine about the spaces that colour our lives, and the curiosities that we fill them with along the way. The places we choose to spend our time, and why we choose to spend our time in them.

As well as a biannual print publication, each issue of Scenery is accompanied by a collection of objects produced in collaboration with select artisans and makers.
