Original Ravers - Peter J Walsh

Original Ravers – 51 previously unseen and unpublished portraits—have been recently scanned from Walsh’s extensive archive of club and rave culture. They offer an intimate and vivid time capsule of the era, standing as a vital record of one of Britain’s most influential clubs and cultural movements. These images capture a pivotal moment when Manchester redefined the landscape of music, fashion, and youth identity. — Paul Wright, British Culture Archive

Peter J Walsh was at the epicentre of Manchester’s groundbreaking acid house, club, and rave scenes. Immersed in a cultural revolution, he documented the faces, fashions, and spirit of The Haçienda dancefloor as the city became a global epicentre for music and style.

The arrival of ecstasy and the rise of club culture broke down barriers of race, class, and sexual orientation, uniting a generation during a period of political turbulence. The fashion — loose, baggy, and unpretentious — was designed for freedom of movement, a stark contrast to the strict dress codes of 1980s nightclubs. At The Haçienda, anything went. It was about the music, the atmosphere, and the shared experience of like-minded people.

Peter Walsh’s photographic archive is an important cultural and historical record of the birth of acid house and club culture in the UK.

His photographs provide a window into a moment of cultural change, and offer a unique insight into the development of one of the most important musical movements of the 20th century. They document the emergence of a genre of music and club culture that would go on to shape international music and fashion for decades to come.

Peter began photographing the Manchester music scene in the late 80s, including at the Hacienda nightclub. His photographs capture the energy and excitement of the burgeoning scene, with photographs of ravers, DJs, and bands at some of the most iconic acid house events in the region.

Peter continues to take photographs; clients include Chanel, Netflix, Fred Perry, The Guardian, The Observer, Le Monde, BBC, Channel 4, The Face, Mixmag, as well countless Record Companies and Artists. His work is exhibited internationally, most recently at The National Portrait Gallery, London.
