Concrete Aesthetic #2 - Barbican Estate
Known for its unique style and central location, the Barbican Estate is a true landmark for the city of London and lovers of modern architecture.
A real neighbourhood enclosed within a very small space in the heart of the City of London.
The term Barbican derives from the Latin Barbecana, which referred to a Roman fort built in that area during the foundation of Londinium.
An ambitious idea came about following the construction of the adjacent Golden Lane Estate.
The Barbican Estate, designed by Chamberlin, Powell, and Bon, set unprecedented standards for the three young architects.
Three 42-storey towers and 13 residential blocks make up this small walled city within London.
Home to the renowned Barbican Centre, this place has, over the years, become a true multi-functional hub, offering both a place to live and entertainment for people of all ages.
Producing an issue of our magazine on this subject was no easy task, I admit, but I believe the time has come to tell the story of this place simply and clearly—hoping to spark the curiosity to explore it, to start a conversation, or perhaps even to see Brutalist architecture from a different perspective.
