Like The Wind #45
Every step counts
Issue 45 of Like the Wind celebrates the rich and diverse world of running, from creative expression and community to the embodied joy of movement. It looks forward to the future of our sport as climate change affects runners worldwide – from cancelled races to heatwaves, but also a future being fought for by athletes, race directors and activists. As Zoë Rom puts it in her long-form article, “Despair is easy. Hope, on the other hand […] demands that we show up again and again and commit to action.” Much like running itself.
Throughout 130 pages, illustrated in the signature Like the Wind style with bespoke artwork and photos, this issue captures the soul, dedication and spontaneity of runners around the globe. In this issue we run the Hood to Coast Relay as one of the 12 Olivias, explore ancient British borderlands, embrace the absurdity of a donut mile and find rhythm though haiku. As our editor Alex Roddie writes in the foreword: “I’ll never tire of reading the stories of runners.”
In issue 45, you’ll find stories including:
- Every step counts: Zoë Rom takes a deep dive into climate change and running. How is our changing climate affecting runners right now and what does the future hold? What responsibility should individuals bear – and what about brands, race directors and run clubs? What’s being done to improve sustainability in the sport? How can we all help?
- Unstoppable: Tayte Pollmann is amazed at the high-altitude endurance of Nepali trail runners, asking how we can support professional trail running in Nepal.
- Oh, go on then: Jacob Adkin’s spontaneous adventure in Chile reminds us to say yes more often.
- Pour tous: Valeria Quinci’s photo essay captures the elation of the Paris 2024 Mass Participation Marathon.
- Six trials: Sarah Barker chats with Bev Docherty about her incredible marathon
- You gotta want it: Magda Strycharska finds high drama on a quintessential British ultra.
- A vision now passing: CW Hamilton’s vignettes of trail moments, accompanied by beautiful woodcut prints.
Like the Wind has always strived to be different. By dedicating an entire issue to discussing what it means to be a female athlete in 2024, we want to spotlight women’s issues, allowing all our readers to join the conversation.
It’s why we run.
