In Plato’s Republic it was\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003econtrasted with episteme, the Greek route of epistemology, the study of knowledge. Belief, then, was opposed to knowledge.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eOpinion vs. truth. What appears to be versus what actually is.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p4\"\u003eIn a more modern sense, the word dogma has become a pejorative.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eBeliefs are labelled dogmas if they’re rigid, if they defy reason or\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eresist criticism. A belief becomes a dogma if it’s accepted without\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eargument. They are illogical.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAt Orienteer we like the juxtaposition of appearance and truth. We\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003elike the irony. We know — and have always tried to show through\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eimagery — a great secret: that there’s movement in stillness and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003estillness in movement. We deal with motion in a medium that is\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003einherently static. But it translates. It is almost like a Buddhist koan.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThe sound of a one-handed clap, a great effort ensnared in a flash.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eKoans are not riddles. They’re about understanding opposites.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003eThis issue aims to showcase this truth. They are tokens of other places, other appearances, they are attempts to capture how the world seemed in that\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003emoment. Doxa. Dogma. Perhaps that’s all we really can aspire to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003edo: see the world as it appears to us in that moment. The truth\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eis hidden somewhere else. Julien Chaintreau, in his powerful\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eessay The New Body Shield (a large, ambitious piece tracing the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eorigin of outdoor wear and building on sources like Baudrillard’s\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003etheory of simulacra) says it best: “[the world] is full of signs, but\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eincreasingly empty of self-grounding.”\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWhat does it mean when a symbol is detached from its original\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003emeaning? When belief fails to track truth? When a skier flying\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003ethrough the air, or a cyclist, runner, hiker — when they’re paused and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003etorn from motion to be presented somewhere else. A millisecond\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eis made immortal and lined with traces, fluid remnants of the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003epast and the future that surround it on either side.
