In 2022, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced a 50% cut to arts and humanities funding in Higher Education, redirecting the money to STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and medical courses. However, the government estimates that creative industries generated £126 billion in gross value added to the economy and employed 2.4 million people in 2022. Research also shows that creative industries and the arts can positively impact well-being, such as through public health interventions. In June 2023, the government published a ‘Creative Industries Sector Vision’ which included a commitment to an additional £77 million in funding. Professor Andrew Burn from UCL (University College London) notes that the effective disappearance of media studies (media/digital art covers areas such as photography, film, sound, social media marketing, web design, animation, gaming) from the curriculum, despite its popularity, has significant consequences for future university students.

The British Academy Study found that media courses contributed £108 billion annually to the economy, and education in these subjects supports a globally leading cultural sector. Following her punk period, Linder went on to become an internationally recognised artist renowned for her multifaceted practice. Her journey has been one of relentless exploration, venturing into realms as varied as fashion, music, performance, perfume, textiles, and film. At the heart of her explorations lies a profound engagement with the poetics of protest, where artistic inquiry intertwines seamlessly with cultural critique.

Throughout her career, Linder has used photomontage as a potent instrument for dissecting and reshaping the portrayal and commercialisation of gender norms and sexual identity. Drawing from source materials extracted from magazines of the late twentieth century, she exposes the weighty stereotypes imposed on both ends of the gender spectrum: automobiles, DIY culture and pornography for men; fashion and domesticity for women. In addition to using found images from magazines, Linder has also used photographs of herself taking on various feminine personae, which navigate concepts of personal invention and the performative dimensions of identity. Her art is informed by a rich tapestry of influences spanning religious art, surrealism, mysticism, and the ever-evolving landscape of social media.

This volume – with new essays by Rachel Thomas, Marina Warner and Chris Kraus, and an interview with the artist by Gillian Fox – accompanies a major touring exhibition.

Griffé #3 - Kenzo

Inland #2 - Georgia 2024

'Our journey through Georgia is an immersion into the soul of a nation rich in history and brimming with untold stories. There have also to be specialists in specific creative roles such as tailoring or fabric sourcing, as for a magazine art direction or feature writing. Bonami—the artist’s friend and longtime collaborator—mischievously adopts Cattelan’s voice to relate his provocative views on art and society, tracing the events of his life and career beginning with his childhood in Italy. The book reproduces a selection of key artworks and features a new foreword and six new chapters that follow Cattelan’s progress from his 2011 retrospective at the Solomon R. Can travel, art, or belief systems offer true autonomy, or are our choices shaped by unseen forces? Featuring visionary voices such as FKA Twigs, Zehra Doğan, Stewart Lee, Mariacarla Boscono, Patricia Churchland, Duran Lantink, and Deva Cassel, TTA26 journeys from Rome to Kenya to Las Vegas to examine the tension between fate and freedom.
